Vážený pane doktore Béme,
Píši Vám, abych vyjádřil své znepokojení ze zpráv, které jsem obdržel z Prahy o centru Společnou cestou v Praze 11, a abych vyjádřil svou zásadní podporu pro práci centra s rodinami bez domova v Praze.
Již dlouho mám osobní kontakty s místním sborem Českobratrské církve evangelické Milíče z Kroměříže, jejichž kostel byl nedávno postaven v sousedství centra Společnou cestou, a který již po řadu let s centrem spolupracuje a podporuje jeho práci.
Od přátel z ČCE jsme slyšeli, že místní rada Prahy 11 má v úmyslu ukončit pronájem budov, ve kterých centrum Společnou cestou sídlí a rodiny, které tam jsou teď ubytované vystěhovat.
Centrum Společnou cestu je unikátní projekt, který pečuje o rodiny bez domova, obzvláště o matky s malými dětmi a romské rodiny a pomáhá jim se navrátit do běžného života. Centrum je, pokud je mi známo, unikátní nejen proto, že poskytuje ubytování a právní poradenství, ale také pro těsnou spolupráci se sousedícím sborem ČCE. Toto propojení centra a sboru dodává jeho práci zvláštní dimenzi a zajišťuje, že práce centra má pro zranitelné rodiny, které zde nacházejí přístřeší a podporu velký význam.
Místní rady ve většině svobodných a demokratických společností obvykle vítají a podporují práci organizací, které pečují o znevýhodněné a společností marginalizované spoluobčany. Je těžké porozumět úvahám, které vedly k rozhodnutí Rady Prahy 11. Pokud jim v tom nebude zabráněno, jejich čin velmi poškodí nejenom ty nejchudší a nejzranitelnější v Praze, ale také pověst hlavního města České republiky, které se tak bude jevit jako město, které o své občany nepečuje a které je nepřátelské vůči snahám církví a jiných nevládních organizací spolupracovat na budování lepší společnosti.
Pane Béme, naléhavě Vás žádám jako Primátora Prahy, abyste znovu zvážil rozhodnutí zrušit centrum Společnou cestou a abyste práci centra podpořil z celého srdce.

Dear Dr Bem,
I am writing to you to express my concern at news I have received from Prague about the ‘Walking Together Centre' - SPOLECNOU CESTOU in Prague 11, and to express my strong support for the work the centre does with homeless families in Prague.
I have a long-standing personal connexion with the local ‘Milic z Kremsir' congregation of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren whose church has recently been built on a site neighbouring the ‘Spolecnou Cestou' centre, and which has for a number of years worked closely with the centre and supported its work.
From our friends in the ECCB congregation we have heard that the local Council for Prague 11 intend to terminate the lease on the premises currently occupied by the Spolecnou Cestou centre and to evict the families who at present are accommodated in the building.
The Walking Together Centre is a unique project that cares for homeless families, mainly mothers with small children and Roma families, helping them to integrate into mainstream society. The Centre is, as far as I am aware, unique in not only providing accommodation and legal advice, but also for the close co-operation between the ‘Spolecnou Cestou' centre and the neighbouring ECCB congregation. This close association between the centre and the congregation gives their work a special dimension and guarantees that the Centre's work makes a real difference to the lives of vulnerable families who find shelter and support there.
In most free and democratic societies, local governments welcome and support the work of organisations that care for the underprivileged and marginalised in society. It is hard to understand the reasoning behind the actions taken by the Local Council of Prague 11 . If allowed to proceed, their actions will have dire consequences not only for some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Prague, but also for the image of the Capital of the Czech Republic, which will be made to look like a city which does not care for its citizens, and which is hostile towards the efforts of churches and other non-governmental associations to work together to build a better society.
Dr Bem, I urge you, as the Mayor of Prague, to reconsider the decision to close the ‘Spolecnou Cestou' and to give your full support to the centre's work.
